Stains and sealants

One of the biggest questions today is “what kind of maintenance do I have to do on the walls of my log home”.

The stain and sealant companies have rapidly progressed over the years with newer and better products. 25 years ago home owners used a mixture of motor oil and diesel fuel to make an exterior sealant for their homes. Due to the very small amount of log homes being built back then it was not cost effective for any company to invest in to better products. Today with the log home industry being 9.5% of all new homes built in the United States Stain and sealant companies have invested in research and development of superior products. If you have to paint your home every 5-6 years, a log home in the same area will be the equivalent.

Two kinds of stains are on the market today. Water Base and Oil Base. With both products your logs have to be prepared to manufacturers specifications so you do not void the warranty.
