Log profiles

Profiles are the shape of the logs which are round to square.

Full round profile is the most preferred today. Logs are round with a Swedish cope so logs seat on top of each other. Most commonly used on handcrafted homes and are difficult to stack. Milled round logs with a “thru-bolt ™” fastening system are much easier to stack and go up in 1/3 less time than packages requiring screws or spikes.

                                                         Full round           Square cants

D-log profile. When you look at the end of a log the shape will look like a “D”. Manufacturers cut 1-3 sides of the log to give the consumer a flat interior wall and a round exterior wall. Other variations are available from manufacturers from flat exterior and round interior, flat interior-round exterior-top and bottom. The consumer pays up to 15% extra for the profile. When you select the “D” log profile the biggest challenge will be sealing up the gaps in corners. This is another reason why the saddle notch is the best corner. Also take in to consideration that when a log is cut 2-4 times across the growth rings the logs will have a tendency to twist, bow and warp more extensively costing you more labor to build.

Square log profiles have you most tendency to twist, bow and warp after the package is cut at the mill. Once you destroy the growth ring that keeps the fibers tight you have problems. For example: you go down to the limber store and purchased 4”x4” posts to build a fence with and by the time you set the posts they have twisted making it more difficult to put up the horizontal boards flat. Same applies in the log home industry. Square logs should not even be considered a log home, they are dimensional timbers and are a timber home and for the life of me do not see how anyone would call it a log home.

Laminated dimensional lumber. Folks this is not a log home product. Just a cheap imitation and you end up with a butcher block look on the ends of your logs.

No value on conventionally framing a home then adding log siding. You will have more heat loss transfer on this style of construction. You will have 5 parts of labor to make a wall this way costing you more money. You have to

1. frame the structure.

2. interior board.

3. insulate the wall.

4. Exterior board to fasten log siding to.

5. Log siding.

To put up a true log wall all you need is one step, set the logs and you are done with much less labor and sub-contractors involved.

Consulting firms that help you through the building process are well worth your time and money. Not knowing the in and out's of building a log home or timber frame home can become very frustrating.  Custom Woodcraft Builders out of Indianapolis, Indiana serve the Mid-Western States.  If anyone has seen it all...it is Custom Woodcraft Builders.
