University of Log Homes is your source for information and education to help consumers select the highest quality products for log homes and log cabins. Photographs are pretty, but you need to know more about wood species, cell structure of different species of logs and most of all moisture content (Bound Cell Water) in the logs. Log home manufacturer's will explain how they address moisture content in different ways. They key is to know what you are buying and how to build accordingly. They are not many 'wrongs' - just lots of differences. Make sure - or at least your general contractor - knows the difference. All non-manufactured logs will settle or shrink - they just do. Bound cell water in high concentration causes movement in the walls called "settling or shrinkage" . With every "cause" there is an expensive "effect". Just build and plan accordingly. This site will try to cover all aspects related to products used in log home or log cabin construction to help consumers make better choices. There are many opinions from many log manufacturers. That does not mean one is wrong and one is right....thus the term 'opinion'. Don't get bogged down in all the details. Figure out the look you want and find a log manufacturer that provides it. Work with a log manufacturer that is not just trying to 'sell wood' but one that can give realistic advice from beginning to end and truly cares that the home gets built to your specifications.
Also of note, make sure the project can be afforded. Log homes cost more - period. A finished log home will almost always be upwards of $150 per sq. ft. and in many premium parts of the country much more. There are way too many 1/2 built houses because someone 'just wanted to sell wood'. Know what the entire process will cost before starting.
University of Log Homes does not and will not specifically recommend any log home manufacturer. The main purpose of this web site is to educate the consumers. University of Log Homes will use Universities around the country that have conducted studies on logs and log homes to support what we state on this web site and we will also have authoritarians with-in the log home industry submitting articles for you to review. Please send us your comments, suggestions and experiences to share with anyone considering a log home. Be sure not to miss a wide array of log home and log cabin suppliers, builders and accessories at the Outdoor Sport Lake & Cabin Show in Fort Wayne Indiana March 12-14, 2010. This event is produced by Coliseum Productions Inc.
Our MissionTo give consumers information that is critical to becoming educated on log homes. From cell structure "cause" and "effects" to understanding long term maintenance costs related to excessive shrinkage of a poor quality product. Log Home Contact Information
